CCTV stands for Closed Circuit Television and is widely used these days for monitoring purposes both in residential and commercial establishments. They are considered as one of the best deterrents against the criminals and intruders.
As the cost of CCTV has come down significantly in the past few years, more and more people are opting for it. Here is all that a novice should know about CCTV cameras.
Features of CCTV
- Resolution: Resolution of the camera is a very important aspect to keep in mind. The basic resolution starts from 640×800, but it is not good enough if you want to see someone’s face or read a number plate in the recording. A poor quality image is often useless, so make it a point to go for at least HD resolution.
- Range: This feature determines the distance up to which the camera can capture a clear image. You need to choose the range depending upon the area that you need to monitor. For outdoor monitoring, you will require a higher range – may be up to 20-25 meters, while for indoors it depends on the area of the room.
- Pan and Tilt: These features allow covering large spaces and getting more control remotely. The maximum angle by which a camera can rotate horizontally is Pan, while vertically is called a tilt.
Security Camera Vulnerabilities
Besides focusing on the features of the camera, it is also important to understand its vulnerabilities. They are susceptible to tampering, backdoor exploit, damages, and destruction by intruders if not placed strategically. This is why it is important to opt for branded Hikvision cameras
Types of CCTV
Wired and Wireless: They come in wired as well as wireless models. Depending on the area where you want to install it, you can choose a model. Among the wired models too, there are some that require a main connection for power, while others can get it from the network cable. For CCTVs that are installed for external monitoring, it is recommended to go with wireless models
Analog and IP Based: Analog closed-circuit television cameras are older versions where the recordings happened directly on the video tape recorder. But nowadays, IP-based security cameras are becoming popular as it lets you monitor and play the recorded images remotely.
Installing a CCTV camera provides a sense of security. But, one needs to choose the camera judiciously after taking into account the features, vulnerabilities, and type of cameras.
